Since announcing that I was going to be changing my lifestyle, I have had a couple of friends volunteer to workout with me. One of my colleagues and friend, Kristen, wants to get started as well, but can only do very low impact workouts, like swimming, due to pain in her legs and feet. When she first said that she'd workout with me, I was excited. Then she mentioned the swimming thing and it deflated me. UNTIL...I got the bright idea to right the wrong and finally finish what was started some 27 years ago.
So I called up my local YMCA and found a class. Because I am not a member, I had to pay $60 for the 7 week session. It sounded reasonable to me as long as they were not going to throw me in the kiddie pool with fins and arm floaties. The woman assured me that it was an adult class and that I would be just fine so I gave a credit card and got the ball rolling. Today, I decided to go swimsuit shopping for the big day. I have swimsuits, but my recent accumulation of pounds, what Kristen refers to as "being a bit fluffy", does not allow me to wear any of them. So I went to do what I do best....SHOP! Now I love to shop, but I'm a baller on a budget so I headed to Marshall's. My goal was to cover my behind for $20.00 or less. |
Mission accomplished! I was pleased with the selection as I entered the dressing room with 7 one piece suits sizes 8 to 12. After trying them all on, I decided that this little number gave me the most coverage in my problem areas (tummy, breasts, and butt). It is a Nike brand swimsuit with a racerback and plenty of material to cover the cheeks. It doesn't have as much support in the bra as I would usually look for, but I'm not going to fall out of it (it's been known to happen) so I figured that it would do. So now I'm all set and ready for my first venture into this new lifestyle of fitness and health. I am only a teensy bit nervous. I am, by no means, afraid of the water. What I am sometimes afraid of is failure. I put pressure on myself to do everything right all the time and this sometimes paralyzes me from doing anything at all. That's not going to happen tomorrow though. I'll be channeling the fearless nine year old girl who dove in with no problem 27 years ago and finally finish what I started. I'll be ready to swim laps with you in just seven short weeks, Kristen! |
Swimming is a confusing sport, because sometimes you do it for fun, and other times you do it to not die. And when I'm swimming, sometimes I'm not sure which one it is.
