The first key for me was to learn what to wear. Here's a few things that I've needed to get through my winter running sessions.
Winter Running Essentials
1. Neck Gaiter - That's the white thing around my mouth. Got mine for about $8 at Marshall's. | 2. Layers - You might want to buy a pair of lined running tights, but for the most part, I just layer the clothes that I used in spring and fall. Again, no need to break the bank. Marshall's and TJ Maxx both have plenty of reasonably priced running gear. My favorite brands there are MPG, Mondetta, RBX, and Avalanche. |
3. YakTrax Run - These strap on to your existing running shoes and will give you more traction on snow-covered and/or icy paths. I love mine! | 4. Smartwool Socks - I admit, I was NOT sold on these until I was out running in that slushy stuff and my feet were soaked within 1/4 of a mile. Before the next 1/4 mile, I felt NOTHING. I attribute it all to these magical socks :) Again, I'm frugal so I waited until they were on sale. |
5. Running Gloves/Mittens - I tried a number of things before deciding to splurge on the Brooks Utopia 3-in-1 mittens ($48). Thank goodness that I did because they definitely work and nothing else that I tried did. | 6. Running Sunglasses - That snow can be bright on sunny days and these will help. Also, the other day I was being pelted in the face and I was happy to have these on to protect my eyes so that I could see where I was going. |
Hope you feel well equipped. Now get out there and ENJOY the beauty that is Winter Running!
